Celebrating Our Custodians: The Heart of Our Beloved Community

Celebrating Our Custodians: The Heart of Our Beloved Community

Every day in the Bellevue School District, custodians make a difference that goes far beyond keeping buildings clean. They build relationships, help create welcoming spaces, and model servant leadership for students and staff. In honor of National Custodian Day on October 2, we highlighted three of our outstanding custodians on BSD's social media, who embody the values of BSD’s strategic plan: building human-centered systems and fostering a beloved community.

Elementary School: Brandy Martinez – Serving with Joy

At Lake Hills Elementary, custodian Brandy Martinez is known for her big smile and even bigger heart. In between her daily duties, Brandy takes time to sit with students in the lunchroom, greet them warmly in the hallways, and build connections that help students feel seen and valued.

“Her pride in her work shows through everything she does, from keeping the building presentable for families to stepping up to support staff whenever needed. While much of her work happens behind the scenes, addressing and solving small challenges before anyone notices, her impact is felt everywhere,” says Principal Miguel Gutierrez.

Brandy’s servant leadership, positive attitude, and ability to connect with students embody BSD’s commitment to human-centered systems. She helps create an environment where joy and belonging flourish.

Middle School: Doug Gladsjo – A Legacy of Service

At Highland Middle School, former head custodian, Doug Gladsjo, continues to leave his mark — even after retirement. Known for his hard work and growth mindset, Doug was a steady partner in implementing new initiatives during his years as custodian. Instead of stepping away after retiring, he chose to come back, volunteering every day to support students and staff.

“Doug helps with lunches by keeping spaces clean and connecting with students. He also lends a hand in the resource room, supporting literacy and learning. His presence brings both stability and joy, whether he’s sitting with students for conversations or offering guidance to Highland’s new head custodian, Sonia," says Principal Anissa Bashey.

Doug’s daily service exemplifies the values of a beloved community. His ongoing commitment reminds everyone at Highland that custodians do much more than maintain buildings — they help sustain relationships and culture.

High School: Phong Tran – Dedication Beyond Measure

At Newport High School, head custodian Phong Tran is described as “Superman” for good reason. Known for his kindness, quick wit, and tireless work ethic, Phong gives 1,000% to his school every single day. Whether responding immediately to requests, maintaining the beauty of a very large campus, or simply brightening a hallway with his cheerful presence, Phong is the heart of Newport.

“Even after undergoing a full knee replacement, Phong never slowed down. His positivity, humility, and willingness to go above and beyond inspire admiration and gratitude from students and staff alike. Newport wouldn’t be the same without him, and his colleagues know it," says Principal Dion Yahoudy.

Phong embodies the BSD vision of human-centered systems through his care, responsiveness, and fun spirit. He reminds us that leadership isn’t about titles, it’s about service, kindness, and showing up for your community.

Honoring Every Custodian

While Brandy, Doug, and Phong represent three shining examples, every custodian across BSD plays a vital role in shaping our schools. They help create welcoming spaces where students can learn and thrive. They relate to both families and staff in ways that often go unnoticed but are always deeply felt. And they remind us, every day, that building a beloved community begins with small acts of care, consistency, and heart.

This National Custodian Day, and every day, we say thank you!
