June 3, 2024 NHE Community Newletter
Message from Admin Team
Dear NHE Community,
As you have heard, next year, NHE will have the honor to launch the first Korean language program in a public school system in the state of Washington. We are thrilled to announce that the teacher who will be launching this program at NHE has been identified and hired. Gyeong Song is really excited to join our staff and drafted the message below introducing her self to our amazing community:My name is Gyeong Song and I am coming to NHE as the Korean Heritage Program Kindergarten teacher! I am so excited!I was born in Seoul, South Korea and my family immigrated to Flower Mound, Texas when I was 13 years old. I went to Texas Woman’s University where I studied Interdisciplinary Studies. I went back to Korea after graduating to teach for 2 years then moved to Washington with my husband Abe and started teaching in BSD. This is my 10th year and it will be my 11th year in the fall. I taught 1st grade at Woodridge, K and 1st at Somerset, and 2nd grade at Enatai.
I am thrilled to be part of this amazing NHE community and the program, but also a bit overwhelmed, being the first and one and only teacher in the program. But I also know I will have a wonderous amount of support from NHE community and the MLL department. It makes me smile and my heart full thinking about students learning Korean whether it’s their heritage language or not and enjoy learning in general. I love teaching and can’t wait to see their smiles.
Sincerely, Gyeong Song
Teaching & Learning
From Melissa Baker, CTE Teacher at Newport High School:
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Kristin Davis, Natasha Nimmo, Joanna McCoy, Maureen Hallock and Sheri Richards for their outstanding mentorship of Teaching Academy high school students throughout the past school year. Despite their already demanding schedules, they have graciously welcomed these interns into their classrooms three days each week, even assisting the students in teaching lessons.
Thank you all for shaping the future of education!
Thank you, PTA & 5th Grade for the Water Bottle Filling Station!
NHE extends a HUGE thank you to the PTA and graduating 5th graders for gifting our school a Water Bottle Filling Station! The Water Bottle Filling Station has been ordered and we hope to get it installed as soon as possible (but with the end of the school year fast approaching, we aren't sure if it will get installed prior to June 18th, the last day of school). A plaque will be attached to commemorate the PTA & Class of 2024's generosity.
Green Team Update
The NHE Green Team would like to express our gratitude to Thompson Construction Northwest and Parr Lumber for their donations of wood and labor. Jacob of Thompson Construction Northwest generously rebuilt our garden beds, created a rain barrel platform, and mounted a gutter on our garden shed to collect rainwater. This will allow to us to water our plants on sunny days. If you visit these businesses or use their services, please say “THANK YOU!” Also, we appreciate Fire Station #9 for coming to fill our barrels with water. 😊
Interested in helping with the NHE garden? The fun continues over the summer. Contact parent volunteer Diana Wadley

Korean Bilingual Program
NHE Open House Welcomes Incoming Korean Program KindergartenersOn Wednesday evening, NHE hosted an open house event specifically for incoming kindergarteners and their families enrolled in the Korean program. The goal of the evening was to build relationships between staff, families, and students, as well as to foster connections among the families themselves.
The event saw a fantastic turnout, with many families in attendance. Student volunteers led guided tours, providing a warm welcome to everyone. The kindergarteners enjoyed a delightful array of Korean snacks, engaging games, and fun activities while their families had the opportunity to learn more about the new program.
It was wonderful to see families connecting with each other and preparing to become a part of the amazing NHE community.
